MGA PRESTIGE programme goes live in Peninsular Malaysia for Student Engineers
Kuala Lumpur, February 23, 2008 – The Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) launched its PRESTIGE - Practical Environmental, Safety and Industrial Guidance for Engineers programme specially designed for engineering students.
MGA President Datuk Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim launched the 2-day PRESTIGE programme in Shah Alam for 67 final-year engineering students from five universities in Peninsular Malaysia.
In his opening address, Datuk Rahim pointed out that natural gas is amongst one of the fastest growing component of the world demand for primary energy consumption and over the last two decades, the Malaysian gas industry has grown significantly with the support of government policies that are aimed at reducing dependence on oil while ensuring a cleaner environment. Besides its major utilization in the power sector, gas is also used in non power sectors such as the petrochemical industry, oil refineries, transportation, residential, gas district cooling, steel mill and other small scale industries.
With the growing utilization of gas and its impact on practically all aspect of our daily living, there is a critical need to draw awareness to the enforcement of sound HSE practices related to gas applications. Proactive measures are required to prevent and eliminate risk of injuries, accidents in operations and related health hazards that could result in damage to our environment, resources, assets and property as well as losses in productivity.
The PRESTIGE program caters to university students in Peninsular Malaysia and is adapted from Shell Malaysia Gas & Power’s annual program which has been successfully rolled out to final-year engineering students from universities in Sabah and Sarawak. |
|
Objectives of the program are :
- To create awareness amongst the students of the whole value chain of gas commercialization.
- To create Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) awareness of the proper usage, delivery and application of gas products.
- To raise understanding of the HSE & Sustainable Development issues faced by the industry today.
- To enhance the students’ understanding in HSE by sharing tools and practices and its application.
- To provide an overview of the career opportunities available in the gas industry.
Industry experts and speakers from PETRONAS, Shell, ExxonMobil, Department of Safety and Health (DOSH), the Department of Environment (DOE) and Energy Commission shared their experiences and knowledge on the gas industry, HSE issues and tools, risk assessments, engineering experience in HSE and discussions on environmental issues.
Participants were involved in group activities, case study and interactive sessions designed to test the students’ ability to understand and apply HSE concepts and to enhance learning and knowledge building. Besides these, HRM career booths were also set up where students interacted with representatives of MGA member companies on career opportunities in the gas industry.
University Kebangsaan Malaysia emerged winner for the MGA PRESTIGE AWARD 2008 for the the top university team of student engineers with the best case study during the workshop. The award comprised of RM5,000 and a trophy for the university and book vouchers for the students.
The MGA-PRESTIGE programme is a concerted effort to reach out to the community, specifically to the nation’s future generations, to take up challenges in the gas industry whilst instilling the importance of HSE aspects in the growing prominent and critical role of the gas industry in fuelling nation-building projects. Through the implementation of this programme, MGA also seeks to establish a firm exemplary stand on the propagation and practical application of HSE in the utilization and promotion of gas as a clean, environmental friendly and efficient source of energy. |

The feedback received substantiated the success of this programme which is the first to be implemented for engineering students in Peninsular Malaysia.
Nadia of UiTM
" We learned knowledge on safety technology and have been exposed to practical safety culture besides understanding the various job opportunities offered in the oil & gas industries."
Sriram of UM
" It was great fun. We learned about HSE in our university but not the depth of it as offered in the MGA PRESTIGE. We learned about HEMP, Bow-Tie, Swiss Cheese methodology, etc."
Azizi of UKM
" Before attending the MGA PRESTIGE, we had no idea at all how the HSE is managed by the industries."
Chong of UPM
" We now understand the job of the HSE officers. We also learned about Best Practices which is a useful measurement tool."
Salam Lau of UTM
" The programme has increased our awareness on the entire value chain of natural gas as well as the importance of HSE in the industries."
Prof. Dr Zulkefli Yaacob of UTM
" The HSE that we teach to the students are for basic knowledge and awareness. Here in MGA PRESTIGE, they are exposed to the actual practices as currently carried out by the industries."
Prof. Dr Zahedi Fisal of UKM
" This programme is indeed brilliant. It offers the right perspectives to the students especially on how to manage HSE themselves when they go out to work after their graduation." |
