Topic: “ HOW CAN WE BEAT CANCER “
Cancer is a complex disease and has multiple risk factors. Through research, we now know a lot about the causes of cancer and we can take better preventative measures. Through research, we now know a lot about detecting the disease earlier, and patients can go on to live longer. Through research, we now know the changes which are important in some cancers, and using new technologies, can target and treat these cancers more effectively. However, the number of cases of cancer in Malaysia is expected to continue to rise, and at present, 1 in 5 Malaysians will develop cancer sometime in their lives and many will continue to die from cancer. What more can we do to beat cancer?
The speaker:
Dr Teo Soo Hwang, Chief Executive, Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) , obtained a first class Masters degree in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, where she was the top student. She then gained her PhD with Dame Professor Jean Thomas as a Wellcome Trust Prize Student at the same university. In 1996, Dr Teo Soo-Hwang joined Professor Stephen Jackson at the Wellcome Trust / Cancer Research UK Institute of Cancer and Developmental Biology, first as a post-doctoral CRC Fellow, then as a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow. Here, she continued to work on DNA repair and DNA damage signaling, identifying a new ligase specifically required for DNA double strand break repair. Dr Teo Soo-Hwang has won a number of awards, including the FASEB Young Investigator Award.
Together with YM Tunku Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ahmad Yahaya and YABhg Toh Puan Aishah Ong, in 2000, Dr Teo Soo-Hwang founded CARIF, to conduct cancer research in Malaysia, and to work together with others to beat cancer through research.
