Malaysia All Set to Take On IGU Presidency in 2009

The Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) recently organised a workshop on “Positioning Malaysia for the IGU Presidency for 2009-2012”.
Held on 20-21 August 2007 at the Marriot Hotel in Putrajaya, the workshop’s objective was to deliberate on the theme and strategic guidelines to be adopted by Malaysia during its presidency of the International Gas Union (IGU) for the 2009-2012 triennium.
Welcoming participants was Datuk (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim, Vice President of Research & Technology (R&T) Division and President of MGA. Currently, Datuk Rahim is also the Vice President of IGU and will assume the role of IGU President in 2009.Tapping on the knowledge and experience of distinguished experts, professionals and think tanks from regional as well as international institutions and organisations present, the workshop formulated the main theme and strategic guidelines for the 2009-2012 Triennium Work Programme through discussions and debates coordinated by Mr Ho Sook Wah, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Management Training Sdn Bhd, who is also the Vice-Chairman of IGU’s Coordination Committee.
The workshop began with a panel session on ’Prospects for Gas in Asia – Issues, Opportunities and Challenges’ which was moderated by Dr Colin Lyle, Managing Director of Gas Market Insights Ltd, UK. Speakers for this session included Mr Ian Cronshaw, Head Energy Diversification Division, International Enegy Agency; Mr Neil Thomas, Head, Global Gas Research, Wood Mackenzie; Mr Rod Reed, General Manager, Shell Gas & Power; and Mr Tetsuo Morikawa, Researcher, Institute of Energy Economics, Japan.

This was followed by syndicated breakout sessions which were facilitated by Encik Kamarulzaman Ahmad and his team comprising Cik Tursina A Rashid, Cik Munira Salim and Dr Amir Hon from the Research & Technology Division of PETRONAS.
Malaysia’s IGU presidency will begin in October 2009 and will culminate in the hosting of the 25th World Gas Conference in 2012 in Kuala Lumpur.
IGU is a worldwide, highly influential and renowned organisation whose purpose is to promote the technical and economic progress of the gas industry. Over the years, IGU has served as the global spokesperson and well-respected authority on the goings-on of all aspects of the gas industry, ranging from exploration and production of natural gas on- and off-shore, pipeline and piped gas distribution systems to customers’ premises and combustion of gas at the point of use.
IGU has 94 members comprising 69 Charter members and 25 Associate members from 68 countries across the globe. MGA has been a member of IGU since 1986.
A total of 46 participants comprising representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Japan, Thailand, Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia attended the two-day event.
